Safety and car seats

Certification of car seats

Laws and regulations around car seats are in place to make it easier for parents to choose a safe car seat for their children. In Europe, there are two main safety standards for car seats: UN R44 and UN R129 (i-Size).

UN R44

UN R44 is the older standard and has been in use since the 1980s. The regulations are based on the child's weight and are divided into three groups:

Groups 0+ (0 - 13 kg)
Group 1 (9 - 18 kg)
Group 2 (15 - 25kg)

If a car seat has a marking with ECE R044/04, then the seat has been through rigorous testing to guarantee protection and safety for the user. Car seats with the marking meet the safety requirements that are in place to be offered for sale on the European market.

The standard is developed to give the child the necessary protection in an accident as well as to ensure that the quality of the product meets high standards.

UN R129 (i-Size)

Car seats that meet the UN R129 standard, also known as i-Size, are safer and easier to use than previous standards. They are also compatible with most modern cars, as they use the ISOFIX system, which has been standard in cars since 2008.

i-Size seats are classified by length, not weight, which makes it easier to choose the right seat for the child's size. They are also designed to provide better protection in frontal, side, and rear-end collisions.

As of September 1, 2024, the sale of UN R44 seats will be banned in the EU. It is therefore important to choose an i-Size seat if you are buying a new car seat.
